People tell us every day how Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) changes lives. Here's the story of a veteran police officer and his five-year legal battle to return to active duty in New York City wearing a hearing aid.
In 2010 Deputy Inspector Dan Carione and his attorneys contacted HLAA soon after he first learned of the New York City Police Department (NYPD) policy to force him into disability retirement after he began wearing a hearing aid. HLAA offered continuing support and information about hearing loss and employment issues as his case against the department progressed. On March 9, 2015, NYPD agreed to a settlement of the suit filed in 2010. Under the settlement, Deputy Inspector Carione will be reinstated to active duty after he passes a hearing test, using a hearing aid. Settlement of this case also benefits other NYPD officers who face the loss of their jobs because of hearing loss, a common occupational hazard in law enforcement.
